How to Stay Balanced during Pitta Season (Summer)

Let's start with the basics...

✨  Staying hydrated is super important right now. My personal drinks of choice are hibiscus, peppermint, coriander or rose tea served at room temperature - as well as cucumber water or watermelon juice.

✨ If you notice that your mind is racing and that your summer nights are sleepless, the heat may have disturbed your electrolyte balance. Restore calm by replenishing electrolytes with a rehydration water like this one

✨ In summertime, living is meant to be easy. Put heavy tasks on hold and enjoy the warm weather. You may be happy to know that you are not supposed to be focused on over-achieving right now. Pitta is balanced by relaxation, luxury, fresh air, barefoot walks on the earth, and cool lake swims. Wear a hat!

✨ You may notice that your emotions are more heated than usual. If you feel angry, jealous or irritable, it's a sign that pitta needs to cool off!

✨ Your daily breathontology practice is also a powerful way to keep heated emotions at bay, and to help you stay cool, calm and playful this summer. Learn more about this powerful practice here

Beauty care:

✨ For beauty care, you may enjoy giving yourself a coconut oil massage and to spray your skin with organic rosewater or hydrofoil. Rose hydrosol is a wonderful toner for all skin types, opens the heart, and makes a practical anti-anxiety spray.

✨ Skin eruptions -- like acne -- can sometimes flare up in the summer due to the increase in heat. Taking 1 tsp of triphala powder at bedtime can help reduce heat in your system

What to eat?

✨ Fruit smoothies are perfect for daytime because they are hydrating, sweet and easy to digest. Salads and raw foods are ideal for mid-day summer heat because they are refreshing, light and astringent. In the evenings, you'll feel balanced by heartier portions.

✨ Favor simple, easy to digest carbs like white rice (brown may be too heavy), quinoa and millet, as well as sweet potato, yam, carrots and taro. Lighter proteins such as fish, egg whites, tofu and tempeh are best for summer.

✨  Enjoy foods with a gel like consistency like aloe vera gel, tapioca and chia seeds. These are naturally soothing as they coat and protect parched tissues in late July. ( see my recipe for the best coconut-mango tapioca dessert here )

✨ Favor cooling foods and herbs like cilantro, mint, dill, cucumber, coconut, pomegranate and jicama. Zucchini, yellow squash, okra and sweet peas are ideal easy to digest, cooling vegetables to brighten your meal.

✨ Enjoy melons like watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew, as well as tropical fruits such as kiwi, papaya, figs and banana which help you stay rejuvenated when sweating.

What should I avoid?

✨ Avoid heavy dairies like cheese - especially mid day. Opt for cooling nuts such as coconut, cashew and peeled almonds to provide substance to your meals.

✨ You may wish to enjoy alcohol at social events but keep in mind that this will increase pitta and lead to dryness and irritability.

✨  Skipping meals may seem like a good idea in the summer, but will lead to irritability, impatience and weakness later in the season. Instead, try to eat meals on time to ensure you stay grounded.
